Video Resumes allow you to speak directly with your employer. It is so much more impactful than just a piece of paper listed down with your accomplishments. However, with that been said, video resumes are used more as a supplement to the paper resumes. They never completely replace paper resumes. They are simply a very strong addition to your application to better distinguish yourself from other applicants.
So, here are my 5 tips on how to make an impressive video resume:
- Write a script - This is the primay step to making a video resume and a key step too. What you say in your video determines the type of impression you create on the recruiter. You may use strong action verbs to increase the impact of your words and rehearse the script you have prepared to sound more polished and professional. Carefully choose the areas of topics on which you want to put your focus on and also if you want to add some shots of you demonstrating a skill.
- Finding a filming space - Finding a filming space is an extremely important component to making your perfect video resume. The space should be clutter-free, hygenic and properly-lit. Most consider a neutral background to be the most ideal for a video resume. But you can shoot your video in your study or your office too to add a personalized touch.
- Keep it short - Ideally, your video resume should not be any longer than 90 seconds. Only highlight the most important characteristics about yourself and don't stray off the topic. Video resumes extending longer than 90 seconds are more likely to not be watched.
- It is okay not to get the perfect shot on the first take - Filming a video resume is much like filming a scene from a movie so feel free to experiment with different tones and expressions while shooting for your video resume. This tip gives you the option of selecting the best take from all the shots and streamlines the editing process.
- Get a feedback - This is a very useful tip. Share your video resume with your peers and kins. Ask for their opinion on it. They may have new and fresh perspectives on it and may help you to get creative with your video like you have never thought of before.
